At least 1.5 million people were living with mental disabilities in Iran in 2018

Human Rights Council – 49thSession – arcdh

Item 4: General debate on human rights situations that require the Council’s attention

At least 1.5 million people were living with mental disabilities in Iran in 2018 but many of them would not receive any allowance.

East Azerbaijan province has some 210,000 disabled people, with only 170,000 registered and only 30,000 receiving some welfare support. The rest depend on family support or must peddle goods on the streets. Disable persons are deprived of an appropriate job, unable to live an independent life, mistreated by government officials!
It is tough to be vulnerable in Iran. If you belong to a minority nation and are disabled, you are vulnerable and do not even have a voice.

Let’s consider the case of leprosy patients in the Azerbaijani provinces. They enjoyed a communal sanitarium in a wadi near Tabriz, thanks to late Dr. Mobayyin, an Azerbaijani philanthropist. Now the site is taken over by the University of Medical Sciences in Tabriz. Some patients are denied access to medical insurance, or their benefits are cut off; some are thrown out; and for some, the relationships with their families have been cut off.

Let us be the voice for the disabled and call upon the Iranian authorities to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which undersigned it in 2009.
