Geneva, March 20, 2025 – The 58th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC) witnessed a strong call for action against discrimination and inequality faced by women from minority nations in Iran. The Association for Human Rights of Azerbaijanis of Iran (ArcDH) highlighted systemic barriers restricting Azerbaijani Turkish women’s access to healthcare, education, employment, and a safe environment.
During the session, speakers emphasized that violence against women in Iran is escalating due to Islamic laws, with non-Persian-speaking women being arbitrarily targeted during protests against compulsory hijab laws.
The issue of child marriage was also raised, with concerns over the Iranian government promoting such practices by offering non-repayable loans as incentives to families.
Furthermore, the speech criticized Iran’s failure to uphold Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), citing the denial of mother tongue education for children from minority communities. The Iranian Parliament’s refusal to implement Article 15 of the Constitution, which permits education in mother languages, was described as a direct violation of international agreements, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Article 26) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Articles 28, 29, and 30).
The ArcDH urged the UN HRC to hold Iranian authorities accountable for their violations of linguistic rights and minority protections, calling for immediate intervention in line with UN conventions and legal frameworks.
